Baseball All-Star Brooks Robinson dead at 86

Baltimore Orioles baseball great Brooks Robinson has died at the age of 86.

The death of the 18-time All-Star and winner of 16 Gold Gloves was confirmed on Tuesday by his longtime team.

The statement

"We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Brooks Robinson," the Orioles statement read.

"An integral part of our Orioles Family since 1955, he will continue to leave a lasting impact on our club, our community, and the sport of baseball," it added.

His career

"He won 16 consecutive Gold Gloves starting in 1960 and set a major league record for most games played at third base with 2,870. Robinson won the American League MVP Award in 1964 after hitting .317 with 28 home runs and a league-best 118 RBIs," the New York Post reported.

"His career peak arguably came in the 1970 World Series, when he made a number of sparkling defensive plays and hit .429 with two home runs as the Orioles defeated the powerhouse Reds in five games," it continued.

His impact

"Brooks stood among the greatest defensive players who have ever lived," MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. "... He was a model of excellence, durability, loyalty and winning baseball for the Orioles."

"I will always remember Brooks as a true gentleman who represented our game extraordinarily well on and off the field all his life," he added.

Brooks had a legendary career in an era that saw him remain with the same team for two decades. His jersey was retired after his playing days and he was later inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame.

Nicknamed the "Human Vacuum Cleaner" for his defensive powers at third base, Brooks may have been best known for his ability to stop the baseball. Only one player, pitcher Greg Maddux, holds more Gold Glove awards for defense.

The loss of the legendary baseball player also led to a moment of silence being observed by his former team ahead of Tuesday night's game as Baltimore took one more time to remember the great years Brooks gave to the Orioles during his amazing career on the field. His leadership helped bring two championships and many wins to the Orioles during some of its best seasons.
