The Chicago Sun-Times keeps a list of homicides in the city, with the latest update showing 403 victims in 2023.
"This database lists the names of everyone killed by another person in the city of Chicago. It’s compiled from Chicago Sun-Times reporting and information from law enforcement agencies and the Cook County medical examiner’s office and updated every day," it explained.
Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson was elected in part on his promise to slow down crime in the city that had soared under former Mayor Lori Lightfoot. So far, Chicagoans are still waiting for progress as shootings continue to plague the area.
The shootings also continue despite the city having some of the nation's strictest gun control laws, helping to prove that the connection between gun control and curbing gun violence is not a helpful method for lowering crime, despite the claims of many lawmakers on the left.
