Asa Hutchinson demands Trump end his 2024 campaign following indictment news

Following the bombshell announcement of former President Donald Trump's second indictment this year, his Republican critics are calling for action.

According to Breitbart, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) was the first high-profile Republican to demand that the former president immediately end his 2024 campaign in the wake of the indictment news, even before Trump can defend himself in court.

Trump was indicted this week by President Joe Biden's Department of Justice over classified documents that were stored at his Mar-a-Lago estate.

The former Arkansas governor has butted heads with Trump on several occasions through the years. On Thursday, he held nothing back in his call for Trump to suspend his presidential campaign.

"With the news that Donald Trump has been indicted for the second time, our country finds itself in a position that weakens our democracy," the governor said in a statement.

Hutchinson, clearly playing politics, previously called for Trump to end his campaign in the wake of Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg's indictment earlier this year.

"While Donald Trump is entitled to the presumption of innocence, the ongoing criminal proceedings will be a major distraction," Hutchinson said.

He added: "This reaffirms the need for Donald Trump to respect the office and end his campaign."

For his part, Trump issued several lengthy statements regarding the news of the latest indictment, continuing his insistence that it's nothing more than a political witch hunt.

He wrote, in part:

The corrupt Biden Administration has informed my attorneys that I have been Indicted, seemingly over the Boxes Hoax, even though Joe Biden has 1850 Boxes at the University of Delaware, additional Boxes in Chinatown, D.C., with even more Boxes at the University of Pennsylvania, and documents strewn all over his garage floor where he parks his Corvette, and which is “secured” by only a garage door that is paper thin, and open much of the time.

Social media users slammed Hutchinson, who remains extremely unpopular with Trump's large support base.

"You are pathetic! You will NEVER be President!" one Twitter user wrote in response to Hutchinson's statement.

With two indictments against him so far, and likely a third indictment coming from a Georgia prosecutor later this year regarding the 2020 election results, Trump has multiple battlefronts with which to content. However, his supporters haven't wavered, and have insisted that they'll vote for him even if he somehow ends up in prison.
