American Medical Association revises stance on minor gender surgeries

The American Medical Association has just taken a significant step back from the progressive push on gender interventions for kids, focusing squarely on surgical procedures.

The American Medical Association (AMA) recently updated its position on gender-affirming care for minors, specifically regarding surgical interventions. The organization stated that the evidence supporting such surgeries for those under 18 is insufficient to issue a firm endorsement.

Additionally, the AMA aligned with guidance from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), which advises deferring these procedures until adulthood.

AMA Shifts on Surgical Interventions

Just the News noted that this isn’t a full retreat by the AMA on the broader gender-affirming care agenda. They’re still on board with hormonal treatments and puberty blockers for minors, which many see as just as troubling.

The AMA’s change of heart on surgeries came hot on the heels of the ASPS urging its members to hold off on cosmetic procedures for gender-confused patients until they reach 19. This isn’t a small nudge; it’s a clear signal that even medical insiders are pumping the brakes.

“The evidence for gender-affirming surgical intervention in minors is insufficient for us to make a definitive statement,” the AMA told National Review. That’s a polite way of saying they can’t justify slicing into kids based on what’s out there.

Legal Fallout Sparks Caution

Adding fuel to this fire, a New York jury recently awarded $2 million to a detransitioner who claimed a psychologist and surgeon rushed her into a double mastectomy at just 16. This case, the first of its kind to hit a jury, exposed the real-world consequences of hasty medical decisions on vulnerable teens.

The timing of the ASPS guidance, right after this hefty verdict, suggests the medical community is starting to feel the heat. Lawsuits like this could be the tip of the iceberg if more young people come forward with regrets.

The AMA’s agreement with the ASPS that “surgical interventions in minors should be generally deferred to adulthood” feels like a rare moment of sanity. It’s a nod to the idea that kids aren’t equipped to make permanent, life-altering choices.

Broader Debate on Minor Treatments

Yet, the AMA and groups like the American Academy of Pediatrics remain outliers globally for still endorsing hormonal interventions on minors. Many countries are stepping back, recognizing that so-called gender confusion often resolves naturally without medical meddling.

Research hints that pushing social transitioning or medical steps can lock kids into paths with lifelong harm, despite claims of reversibility. That’s a gamble no child should be subjected to under the guise of compassion.

The cultural obsession with affirming every fleeting feeling in children has gone too far, and this partial rollback on surgeries is a crack in the armor of woke ideology. It’s a small win, but the battle over hormones and blockers rages on.

Future Implications for Policy

What’s next could be a wave of legal challenges, especially as more detransitioners speak out about being railroaded into irreversible decisions. The $2 million verdict might embolden others to hold reckless practitioners accountable.

Politically, this shift by the AMA could arm lawmakers with ammunition to push for stricter guardrails on all forms of gender-affirming care for minors. If even the medical establishment admits the science isn’t settled on surgeries, why trust it on hormones?

For now, parents and concerned citizens must keep the pressure on, demanding that children be protected from experimental treatments masquerading as settled science. The tide might finally be turning, but there’s a long road ahead to reclaim common sense in medicine.
