Alvin Bragg announces prison sentence for man who drove over two pedestrians

A New York City man was handed a sentence on Friday of 5 to 15 years in prison for his role in a fatal crash that claimed the lives of two pedestrians, including a celebrated salsa star and a close friend of rapper Cardi B.

Leandro Diaz-Ramirez, 29, hailing from the Bronx, admitted guilt to two counts of second-degree manslaughter in connection to the tragic incident that unfolded in Inwood in August 2022, according to statements from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

The victims

The victims, David Fernandez, aged 40, and Joel Adames, aged 31, were both prominent figures in their community, known and loved by many.

Diaz-Ramirez's reckless driving was highlighted in court proceedings, revealing he was traveling at approximately 59 mph in a 25 mph zone.

Ignoring a red light at the intersection of Sherman Avenue and 207th Street, he collided with another vehicle lawfully passing through a green light at the same junction, as detailed by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

The investigation

The force of the impact propelled the second vehicle onto the sidewalk, tragically striking Fernandez and Adames, resulting in their untimely deaths, authorities confirmed.

Further investigation revealed Diaz-Ramirez was under the influence of marijuana at the time of the crash, compounding the severity of the offense, according to law enforcement sources.

Reflecting on the gravity of the situation, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg emphasized, "Leandro Diaz-Ramirez’s reckless actions led to the tragic loss of two lives. While he has been appropriately sentenced, no punishment can restore Joel Adames and David Fernandez, whose lives were tragically cut short."

Lives mourned

Fernandez, renowned as a salsa instructor with numerous international accolades to his name, was deeply admired within his community. Fondly remembered as an exceptional individual, he left an indelible mark on those who knew him best, including lifelong friend Jolemy Clasé, who described him as beloved and cherished by many.

Fernandez's talents extended beyond the dance floor; he was also recognized as a skilled barber. Tragically, it was while providing one of his trademark late-night haircuts to Adames that fate intervened, leading to their heartbreaking demise.

Adames, affectionately known as a sweetheart within his family, was mourned by his loved ones and remembered by Cardi B in a heartfelt social media tribute. The rapper expressed outrage at the senseless loss, condemning the negligence that led to the tragedy and lamenting the void left by Adames' departure.

In the wake of this devastating event, the community mourns the loss of two vibrant souls, while grappling with the harsh reality of the consequences of reckless behavior on the roads.
