Activists groups and Democrats demand Justice Thomas recuse himself from Trump immunity case

Liberal activist groups and even some Democrats in Congress have worked overtime targeting U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

Now that former President Donald Trump's immunity case -- a monumental decision to be made to say the least -- some believe that Thomas should recuse himself from that particular case.

That was made evident in a recent op-ed for The Hill penned by Austin Sarat, who believes Thomas has "a clear conflict of interest" in Trump's immunity case.

Sarat, in his piece, pointed to a number of Democratic politicians who have already called on Thomas to recuse himself from the case.

What's happening?

Sarat dropped a number of names of people who all just happen to be Democrats, who have repeatedly attacked the high court ever since it became a 6-3 conservative majority.

Liberals and their media allies are beyond outraged at some of the conservative high court's rulings over the past few years and have worked tirelessly to attack and vilify it at every turn.

Sarat wrote:

Calls for him to do so already have come from people like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cotez (D-N.Y.), Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.), Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) and groups like Stand Up America, a democracy advocacy group. On Feb. 28, Stand up America simply tweeted, “Clarence Thomas must recuse himself from this case.”

He also pointed out that AOC said Trump's immunity case would "directly implicate his wife so this is one of the most classic, textbook conflicts of interest."

Sarat also referenced a previous statement from Sen. Durbin, who said, "There are so many unanswered questions about the relationship of the justice and his family with the Trump administration that I think in the interests of justice, he should recuse himself."

Other groups who spend a bulk of their time hyper-focused on Thomas noted that the Supreme Court's most recent "Code of Conduct" is clear grounds for Thomas to recuse himself from the immunity case. In other words, the op-ed is simply a list of radical groups and individuals who, again, are mad that the court is not deciding in their party's favor.

Will Thomas do it?

Justice Thomas has already written off multiple similar calls and has all but brushed off the attacks against him regarding ethical concerns related to his relationship with billionaire GOP megadonor Harlan Crow.

As Sarat correctly pointed out in his piece, court observers generally do not believe that Thomas will take himself off of the case.

He continues on with multiple paragraphs detailing his wife, Ginny Thomas, and her involvement in "efforts" to help Trump overturn the 2020 election.

Activists will continue to spew their concerns and suggestions, but Thomas has work to do, and it's highly unlikely that he'll bow to a handful of radicals who want him removed.
