New Jersey braces for nor’easter as Gov. Murphy remains abroad

New Jersey—literally—as a monstrous nor’easter barrels toward the state with winds fierce enough to rearrange your backyard furniture.

Breitbart reported that with Acting Gov. Tahesha Way stepping up to declare a state of emergency across all 21 counties, the Garden State is hunkering down for a brutal storm set to lash the East Coast with heavy rain and damaging winds from Sunday into Monday, while Gov. Phil Murphy is reportedly halfway across the Atlantic, attending a wedding.

On Saturday at 10:00 p.m., Acting Gov. Way made the call to activate emergency protocols, preparing for a weather event that could turn coastal areas into swimming pools and inland regions into wind tunnels.

Forecasts paint a grim picture: coastal winds could hit 60 mph, while inland gusts may reach 40 mph, threatening property and safety alike.

Particularly vulnerable spots like the shores of southern New Jersey, Delaware, and the Virginia Tidewater region are bracing for significant flooding, according to weather experts cited by The New York Times.

Acting Gov. Way didn’t mince words about the urgency, stating, “In preparation for this storm, a state of emergency was issued for all 21 counties out of an abundance of caution.”

Acting Governor Takes Charge Amid Crisis

She went on to warn, “Starting on Sunday, a dangerous coastal storm will begin to move past our state with extreme weather conditions for several counties, especially those on the Shore.”

Her message is clear: stay informed, stay off the roads, and be ready to act if evacuation orders come down the pike.

While Way holds the fort, questions swirl about Gov. Murphy’s absence during this critical moment for New Jerseyans facing nature’s wrath.

Murphy, reportedly in Europe with his wife Tammy for a close family friend’s wedding, left the state on October 9 and isn’t slated to return until October 14, per an email from his office sent to reporters days earlier.

Interestingly, there was no public heads-up from the governor himself about jetting off during the lead-up to this menacing storm—hardly the transparency many taxpayers might expect when their leader is sipping champagne overseas.

A spokesman for Murphy, Tyler Jones, attempted to smooth things over by noting, “The Governor has been in close communications with his team and emergency response officials regarding the nor’easter storm impacting the East Coast.”

Questions of Leadership and Accountability

Close communication is one thing, but being physically present to lead during a state of emergency is another—voters might wonder if a Zoom call from a European ballroom cuts it when winds are howling at 60 mph.

Murphy’s frequent getaways, often to his luxury villa in Italy, as noted by The New York Post, aren’t new, but the timing of this jaunt raises eyebrows when New Jersey’s shores are on the brink of disaster.

While no one begrudges a family celebration, the optics of a governor absent during a looming crisis—and without a direct public word—might leave constituents feeling more风雨如晦 than reassured, especially as Acting Gov. Way shoulders the burden of steering the state through this tempest.
