Unofficial reports reveal encounters with approximately 121,000 migrants along the southwest border during the initial half of the month, contributing to a Fiscal Year 24 total of about 504,000 migrants.
In conjunction with the apprehensions, agents documented an estimated 11,000 got-aways, representing those observed crossing the border but not apprehended.
This figure may be artificially low due to agents in Tucson and Del Rio Sectors being reassigned from line operations to manage apprehended migrants.
Since the start of FY24 on October 1, around 70,000 migrant got-aways have been documented. Official numbers are not regularly released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The Tucson Sector, particularly overwhelmed with migrant crossings, saw agents apprehend roughly 40,000 migrants in the first half of the month, bringing the FY24 total to just under 160,000.
The Del Rio Sector in Texas is grappling with substantial migrant apprehensions, with an unofficial report indicating around 32,000 migrants apprehended. This brings the FY24 total for the Del Rio Sector to approximately 113,000 migrants.
In response to the escalating number of apprehended migrants, the Biden administration opted to close legal ports of entry in Lukeville, Arizona, and Eagle Pass, Texas. Furthermore, the administration announced the closure of a significant railway border crossing in Eagle Pass over the weekend to help curb the number of migrants riding on top of trains to illegally enter the country across the southern border.
The surge in migrant apprehensions along the U.S.-Mexico border raises concerns about the strain on border enforcement resources and the effectiveness of current immigration policies in nearly three years under the Biden administration's open border policies.
The unofficial figures indicate an ongoing challenge for Border Patrol agents, particularly in sectors like Tucson and Del Rio, where overwhelming numbers impact operational capacities.
The Biden administration's response, involving the closure of legal ports of entry and a major railway crossing, underscores the complexities of managing the influx of migrants and maintaining border security.
As the situation continues to unfold, there is heightened scrutiny of the administration's strategies to address border challenges and ensure the enforcement of immigration policies.
