President Joe Biden will close out his first year in office next month. However, several key staffers could be exiting before he reaches that milestone.
Morale is tanking within the administration while Biden’s approval among the American people has also bottomed out, Fox News reported. Several staffers are said to be updating their résumés with plans to leave their jobs in the new year.
According to Politico’s West Wing Playbook Wednesday, staffers are so disheartened that they “anonymously fumed” to the publication in order to get the attention of higher-ups to the state of things within the administration. “A lot of the natural coordination that happens in a typically functioning White House has been lost, and there has been no proactive effort to make up for it through intentional team building,” an anonymous White House official said.
Some chalk it up to a palpable tension between longtime advisers and new staffers with no way to break the ice due to limited in-person activities. However, even events still being held that staffers would normally be welcomed to are limited by a “lottery system” with many frozen out.
“No one expects business as usual during the pandemic, but it’s beyond demoralizing, it’s insulting — especially when you see DNC and Hill staff and other D.C. types get invited,” another anonymous official said. “Many colleagues have brought this up to me unprompted. And I’ve had D.C. friends ask me if I wanted to grab coffee after they attended. Meanwhile, we work here, and most of us haven’t worked here before or stepped foot into the White House.”
This dissatisfaction and lack of unity are contrary to the image Biden is trying to project. “It’s also hypocritical and ironic that a president whose brand is built on empathy and family has staff policies that fly in the face of that brand,” a staff member told the news outlet. “It’s not a good look, and it’s emblematic of how this place runs.”
Beyond Pennsylvania Avenue, Biden isn’t faring poorly among the American people. Many polls are showing Biden with 50% or more voters disapproving of the job he’s doing while a Monmouth University poll found that his approval rating was only 40%.
Biden has done so much damage to the nation in such a short time, and voters can’t help but take notice. It’s no surprise though — a president who can’t keep his own house in order has no hope for successfully running a nation.
