White House press secretary Jen Psaki told Fox News reporter Peter Doocy on Thursday that communism is “a failed ideology” when asked about protests in Cuba.
“Peter, first I would say communism is a failed ideology, and we certainly believe that. It has failed the people of Cuba,” Psaki said.
“They deserve freedom. They deserve a government that supports them, whether that is making sure they have health and medical supplies, access to vaccines, or whether they have economic opportunity and prosperity,” she added.
Psaki also sought to connect her updated comments with earlier claims the Cuba protests were related to COVID-19.
“And instead, this has been a government — an authoritarian communist regime — that has repressed its people and has failed the people of Cuba. Hence, we’re seeing them in the streets,” Psaki continued.
“But I would note that the ideology of the government, which has failed, has led to a fail — a lack of access to economic opportunity, to medical supplies, to COVID vaccines. So all of those pieces are true,” she added.
Many Americans support intervention to help provide democracy in Cuba. A petition at Change.org to urge military intervention has already reached more than 400,000 signers.
The Cuban freedom movement will continue to challenge the Biden administration regarding whether it will act to help. At least Psaki is agreeing that communism is bad, which is at least a good place to start.
