White House scrambles to explain Biden vow to shut down coal plants 'across America'

In what has almost become standard operating procedure in the current administration, White House officials have been forced once again to walk back ill-advised remarks made by President Joe Biden – this time, regarding the future of America's coal plants, as the Daily Wire reports.

According to National Review, Biden's comments came during a campaign appearance in Carlsbad, California, on Friday when he declared it necessary to close the country's coal plants due to their high cost of operation and unreliability.

"I was in Massachusetts about a month ago on the site of the largest old coal plant in America," Biden began. "Guess what? It cost them too much money. No one is building new coal plants because they can't rely on it, even if they have all the coal guaranteed for the rest of the existence of the plant. So it's going to become a wind generation."

The president continued, "And all they're doing is, it's going to save them a hell of a lot of money and using the same transmission line that they transmitted the coal-fired electric on, we're going to be shutting these plants down all across America and having wind and solar power."

Biden's take drew intense criticism from Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin (WV), who also chairs the chamber's Energy and Natural Resources Committee, as ABC News noted.

According to Manchin, the president's words were "not only outrageous and divorced from reality, they ignore the severe economic pain the American people are feeling because of rising energy costs."

Those sorts of statements, Manchin said, "are the reason the American people are losing trust in President Biden. … It seems his positions change daily depending on the audience and politics of the day."

Furthermore, asserted Manchin, Biden now owes coal workers in West Virginia "an immediate and public apology" for the "offensive and disgusting" stance taken on the stage in California.

As has happened numerous times throughout Biden's tenure in office, administration staffers scrambled to clean up the mess their boss made, attempting to clarify what was actually meant.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre released a statement contending that the president's words were being dishonestly described, if not totally misunderstood.

"The president's remarks yesterday have been twisted to suggest a meaning that was not intended; he regrets it if anyone hearing these remarks took offense," Jean Pierre insisted, adding that the nation is in the midst of an energy transition and that Biden "is determined to make sure that this transition helps all Americans in all parts of the country, with more jobs and better opportunities... ."

Even so, the regularity with which his staffers seem to find themselves in the unenviable position of having to explain, clarify, or even undo his proclamations on the public stage really does beg the question of why anyone would pay the slightest attention to anything Biden has to say, regardless of the topic, and that is a sad state of affairs, indeed.
