White House scrambles to clarify Vice President Kamala Harris's comments on hurricane relief

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre is again cleaning up another rhetorical mess. However, this time the gaffe came courtesy of Vice President Kamala Harris.

Jean-Pierre was forced to clarify the White House's position after Harris insisted aid for Hurricane Ian relief would be handed out based on "equity," the Daily Caller reported. Harris made remarks to that effect at the Democratic National Committee's Women's Leadership Forum on Friday.

Harris said that communities of color and low-income areas are "most impacted by these extreme conditions." She further explained that "not everyone starts out at the same place, and if we want people to be in an equal place, sometimes we have to take into account those disparities."

However, Jean-Pierre insisted the message "is not what the vice president said," she claimed. "The vice president was clearly talking about long-term investment, not FEMA [Federal Emergency Management Aid] for hurricane response efforts," Jean-Pierre explained.

"The vice president and the president have been clear that the federal government has been and will continue to be there for all Americans recovering from these devastating storms as we're seeing the president and first lady do today and will see them do clearly in Florida on Wednesday," Jean-Pierre said. "We are committed to quickly getting resources to all communities impacted, period," she added.

"Full stop. But we also note that some people, particularly of lower income, have a hard time accessing that help. That's why this administration has also made it a priority to remove barriers and ensure that everyone, regardless of their zip code, and that's what she was talking about."

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency before the Category 4 storm struck last week. The Biden administration approved the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA to assist with aid in the aftermath of the historic storm that killed at least 47 in the Sunshine State.

Harris may have spoken out of turn. However, the administration is always ready to play favorites -- regardless of how hard Jean-Pierre works to cover for them.
