White House coronavirus response coordinator resigns after just one year on the job

President Joe Biden is losing a key advisor in fighting the coronavirus pandemic. While the virus is temporarily in retreat, the president continues to warn about the coming doom.

Jeff Zients, White House coronavirus response coordinator, said Thursday he was leaving the administration after only one year in the position, Breitbart reported. Though the virus is on the wane, Biden has promised new variants on the horizon.

The White House issued a statement about Zients’ exit that included the usual niceties. “I called on Jeff Zients to lead my Administration’s COVID-19 response because there is no one better at delivering results than Jeff,” the president said.

“He is a man of service and an expert manager,” Biden said. “I will miss his counsel and I’m grateful for his service.” Dr. Ashish Jha is set to replace Zients in the role, according to the White House.

Zients played a prominent part in the administration’s COVID-19 response, which is likely one of the issues that catapulted the president to victory in 2020. He was the point man who coordinated briefings with Dr. Anthony Fauci, chief medical advisor to the White House, and Centers for Disease Control Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky.

Still, coronavirus response has been a disaster for Biden with Zients at the helm. Under his watch, the Delta and Omicron variants emerged and testing shortages plagued the nation during a surge over the holidays.

Biden has warned the nation that the pandemic is “far from done” despite the relaxed restrictions under Zients. “We must fight the virus overseas, prepare for new waves, and new variants – all of which can be coming,” Biden warned while pushing for vaccinations and boosters.

Like everything else that’s happened since Biden took office, the coronavirus pandemic has been mismanaged and mishandled. Zients had a role in it, but ultimately the problem lies with the president, who routinely overpromises and underdelivers.
