White House continues stubborn deflection on causes of record high inflation

Despite evidence and opinion to the contrary coming in from all corners, the White House remained defiant this week about the drivers of record-setting inflation numbers, shutting down any suggestion that its own policies may have contributed to the crisis, as Breitbart reports.

It was on Tuesday that the Labor Department issued a consumer price report in which it was revealed that inflation has now risen to its highest annual rate in more than 40 years, and the administration has been engaging in a futile form of denial ever since.

Attempting on Monday to get ahead of the anticipated bad news, White House press secretary Jen Psaki claimed that the Russian invasion of Ukraine and what she called the “Putin price hike” were to blame for the pain being felt by everyday American consumers.

On Tuesday, President Joe Biden himself repeated the spurious assertion, telling a crowd in Iowa that “Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has driven up gas prices and food prices all over the world. So everything is going up. We saw it in today’s inflation data.”

The beat went on throughout Wednesday as well, with Psaki again trotting out the explanation that the inflation gripping innumerable economic sectors was the result of the pandemic, supply chain problems, and the conflict in Ukraine.

Answering critics, such as former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, who argue that profligate government spending has been a primary driver of the current predicament, Psaki said, “The alternative would have been that we would have gone into a massive economic downward spiral and many Americans would have not have enough food to put on the table.”

Despite stubbornly doubling down on its position, the administration has been beset by counterpoints to its “Putin price hike” gambit all week long, and not just from predictable opponents such as Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who noted, “When you’re printing trillions and trillions of dollars, the idea that you can just do that ad infinitum without there being any consequences was completely foolhardy.”

The administration’s approach to the inflation news also drew the ire of Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin (WV), who said this week, “Instead of acting boldly, our elected leaders and the Federal Reserve continue to respond with half-measures and rhetorical failures searching for where to lay the blame.”

Indeed, with new poll numbers putting Biden’s approval rating at a shockingly low 33%, it appears that the American people have had enough of the deflections and deceptions coming out of the Oval Office and are likely preparing to make their dissatisfaction with the president and his party known at the midterm ballot box come November.
