President Joe Biden broke many of our nation’s promises to Afghanistan when he essentially handed control of it back to the Taliban. In the process, Biden even broke one important promise of his own.
The Biden administration has admitted to leaving behind a “small number” of American citizens who are now at the mercy of the terrorist organization, according to The Hill. The president withdrew forces ahead of an Aug. 31 deadline and it’s unclear when the last service member will depart.

“Of those who self-identified as Americans wanting to leave the country since Aug. 14, we have thus far received confirmation that about 6,000 have been evacuated or otherwise departed,” White house press secretary Jen Psaki said during a news conference Monday. “This number will likely continue to grow as our outreach and arrivals continue,” she claimed.
Psaki tried to minimize what’s happening to those left behind by stating a “small number” of U.S. citizens remained in Afghanistan. She also assured reporters that the president was working to contact individuals left behind even as the number of people successfully evacuated has begun to dwindle.
The U.S. has removed 120,000 people from the country since the effort began earlier this summer. Still, Secretary of State Antony Blinken admitted that there were around 300 Americans stranded in the nation as the retreat continues on schedule for Aug. 31. What’s to become of them is now up to America’s enemies to decide.
This is in stark contrast to the promise Biden made earlier this month, Fox News reported. In an Aug. 18 interview with George Stephanopoulos, he told the ABC News host that the plan was to get “everyone” out of Afghanistan — Americans, the Afghans who helped U.S. forces, and even their families.
“That’s what we’re doing now, that’s the path we’re on. And I think we’ll get there,” Biden had promised. “If there’s American citizens left, we’re gonna stay to get them all out.”
The president has gone back on his word by leaving American citizens stranded. Moreover, he’s reneged on America’s promise to secure Afghanistan and keep the Taliban from retaking the nation. He has damaged his integrity, but worse yet is the severe impact these decisions could have on U.S. national security going forward.
