Washington state senator dies after contracting COVID-19

Washington state Sen. Doug Ericksen (R) died on Saturday after recently testing positive for COVID-19, the state’s Senate Minority Leader John Braun (R) announced on Saturday.

“I am deeply saddened by the news that Doug passed away yesterday. My prayers and thoughts are with his wife, Tasha, and his daughters. Doug could be larger than life and our caucus will miss him greatly. He was passionate about his duties as a member of the Legislature and dedicated to his constituents,” Braun shared in a statement.

“We are heartbroken to share that our husband and father passed away on Friday, Dec. 17. Please keep our family in your prayers and thank you for continuing to respect our privacy in this extremely difficult time,” a statement from his family revealed.

According to an Associated Press report, “he tested positive for the coronavirus while in El Salvador. Sen. Doug Ericksen’s cause of death wasn’t immediately released. He was an outspoken critic of the state’s COVID-19 emergency orders.”

Erickson had served in the state’s legislature since 2010.
