Washington Post made racist comment about Justice Clarence Thomas in article about potential Supreme Court pick

The Washington Post is being accused of racism for pledging that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, the court’s second black justice, is espousing the “thinking of white conservatives,” while on the bench.

According to Breitbart News, the article was about Rep. Jim Clyburn’s (D-SC) influence over President Joe Biden as concerns his upcoming Supreme Court nomination, and the Post issued the seemingly racist quote from Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) about Clyburn’s credentials.

“‘If you know that a person has been vetted by Jim Clyburn, you know that person won’t go to the court and end up being a Clarence Thomas,’ referring to the Black justice whose rulings often resemble the thinking of white conservatives,'” wrote the “paper of record.”

The Post later issued a correction after a massive backlash from social and regular media, with people calling out the paper as “racist” and saying that it was a slur toward the high court’s justice.

“A previous version of this story imprecisely referred to Justice Clarence Thomas’s opinions as often reflecting the thinking of White conservatives, rather than conservatives broadly. That reference has been removed,” it said.

Political commentator Stephen Miller weighed in, saying, “So the Washington Post just casually refers to Clarence Thomas as an Uncle Tom and it’s just something that the rest of the journalists just let happen without speaking out. It’s just a thing that happens and they are fine with it.”

Shapiro Chair of Public Interest Law at George Washington University, criminal defense attorney, and legal analyst Jonathan Turley said, “After an outcry, the Washington Post has removed a reference to Justice Clarence Thomas as “the Black justice whose rulings often resemble the thinking of White conservatives,” calling it a “disgraceful but revealing reference.”
