Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin comes out against national abortion restrictions

Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) was voted into office in part because of his pro-life stance. However, his views on national policy have some voters concerned.

Youngkin said he believes in "states' rights" on issues, including whether to outlaw abortion, the Washington Examiner reported. The overturning of Roe v. Wade as part of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision has moved abortion to a state issue without a federal prohibition.

"We find [ourselves] in a situation today reflecting what I believe was a very good decision from the Supreme Court to remand, to the states, the right to make these decisions," Youngkin said of the Dobbs decision. The Virginia Republican, who may be eyeing a 2024 presidential run, gave an hourlong interview at the Texas Tribune Festival Friday.

"I felt that the decision was correct," he continued. "This is a decision that should be made by voters — by citizens."

The problem is that abortion is not like other issues where shades of gray exist, however. Democrats advocate for barbaric practices like late-term abortion that allows a child to be killed right up until the moment of birth.

However, Youngkin stressed this issue is about states' rights for him. "I want to remind everybody, I am a homegrown Virginian," he said.

"And there were a few influential Virginians who were present at the founding of this great country, one of which was a gentleman named Thomas Jefferson. And I believe in states' rights," Youngkin stressed.

"The federal government consistently overreaches. … States, in fact, have the ability to deal with these issues based on their voters' desires. So, this is one of those circumstances." Youngkin said.

He's correct that there is a danger in the federal government running roughshod over citizens' ability to self-govern in the states. However, abortion is a great evil and the taking of a human life -- and that's a reality that should be recognized nationwide.
