Violent Ex-con arrested after crime spree that left four dead and three injured

Plenty of Democrats decry the scourge of gun violence. However, they fail to discuss the bigger problem of letting dangerous criminals out of jail.

Ezekiel Kelly, 19, was arrested after an alleged crime spree in Memphis, Tennessee, that left four people dead and at least three others injured, Fox News reported. The ex-convict had been previously sentenced to 3 years in prison for another violent crime but was released in March after only serving 11 months.

Kelly's crimes began just after 1AM Wednesday after he gunned down a man in his driveway, and picked up again in a string of shootings later that afternoon. A portion of his shooting spree had reportedly been live-streamed on Facebook.

As police caught up with the suspect, Kelly allegedly committed two armed carjackings in an attempt to flee. He was arrested after leaving behind eight different crime scenes and now faces a host of felony charges.

However, Kelly should have never been on the streets in the first place. Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said during a Wednesday night news conference that Kelly was previously in jail on charges related to an attempted first-degree murder in April 2021 that he pled down to aggravated assault.

Kelly had been granted early release from prison less than six months ago. "If Mr. Kelly served his full three-year sentence, he would still be in prison today, and four of our fellow citizens would still be alive," the mayor said.

"These evil actions show why truth in sentencing is a must, and we should do all we can to make our city safe," Strickland said. "We must unite around this principle and stand up to the challenge of violent crime in our city."

Kelly's crime spree comes on the heels of Eliza Fletcher's murder. The 34-year-old mother and teacher were allegedly kidnapped and killed while jogging last week. The suspect in her murder, Cleotha Abston, was also an ex-convict out on early release.

Democrats talk about restricting gun rights to get weapons off the streets. However, it would be more productive to keep the criminals who use them off the streets.
