UC Berkeley prof leaves over cancel culture attitude toward visiting scientist

University of California – Berkeley professor and scientist David Romps resigned Monday after the school refused his efforts to invite a scientist to campus who had been canceled at MIT.

“I am resigning as Director of the Berkeley Atmospheric Sciences Center (BASC) @BerkeleyAtmo. To reduce the odds of being mischaracterized, I want to explain my decision here,” tweeted in the first of a series of posts regarding the decision.

“Excluding people because of their political and social views diminishes the pool of scientists with which members of BASC can interact and reduces the opportunities for learning and collaboration,” Romps added in another post.

“Romps’ mention of a scientist having been canceled by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) makes it clear the professor was likely referring to geophysicist Dorian Abbot, who made headlines earlier this month after MIT canceled his lecture in response to a woke mob who targeted Abbot for supporting ‘merit-based evaluations,’” Breitbart News reported.

Abbot later added a virtual presentation at Princeton attended by thousands of students, showing the criticism was not based on his teaching but rather served as a political ploy.

The latest departure of a top scientist willing to take a stand against woke culture reveals not every leader at today’s state universities agrees with the liberal policies influencing their schools.
