President Joe Biden has finally – albeit reluctantly – permitted deeper investigation into the once-maligned theory that COVID-19 leaked from a lab in Wuhan, China, but according to Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH), he is only doing so because he was backed into a corner by an angry electorate, as Fox News reports.
News emerged last week that Biden ordered the launch of a 90-day probe of the lab leak hypothesis and that he declared his expectation that results of the investigation will be released upon completion. The president urged the U.S. intelligence community to “redouble their efforts” to get the the bottom of the virus’ origins.
Many – including Turner – have suspected, however, that Biden’s new curiosity is not the result of a pressing desire to know the truth, but rather the product of growing outrage and frustration among the American people and their elected representatives in Congress, all of whom want to understand the root causes of the pandemic that devastated lives and led to unprecedented economic upheaval.
Just last week, Repubican Sens. Ron Johnson (WI) and Rick Scott (FL) sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken demanding answers amid reports that Biden quietly curtailed an earlier investigation into the origins of the novel coronavirus, as the Daily Caller noted. “For nearly a year, the press and Washington Democrats said it was crazy to suggest that COVID-19 may have leaked from a lab. Its about time President Biden acknowledges that the American people deserve answers,” Scott said.
Also putting pressure on Biden was the fact that the Senate last week unanimously passed a measure requiring declassification by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence of “any and all” information regarding the possible connection between the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the origin of COVID-19, according to The Hill.
During an appearance on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures, Turner – a member of the House Intelligence Committee – argued that “everything points to the Wuhan lab” in terms of the inquiry of the virus’ origins and declared that “the Chinese government needs to be held accountable” for the devastation wrought.
Turner outlined a number of areas of inquiry he believes must be explored in getting to the truth of what occurred prior to the start of the virus’ worldwide spread, including intelligence that revealed an unusual cessation of activity, traffic, and movement in the vicinity of the Wuhan lab in October of 2019 as well as reports of scientists at the facility becoming sick enough to require hospitalization at around the same time.
Host Maria Bartiromo asked Turner if he though COVID-19 was intentionally designed to serve as a bioweapon, he replied, “It certainly could have been,” pointing to the fact that it was well-known that research on viruses of this type was being conducted in Wuhan, and that there are intelligence reports that “even include perhaps collaboration between the Wuhan lab and the Chinese military.”
According to Turner, hesitancy on the part of the Biden administration to fully probe the origins of COVID-19 is evidenced by its prior unwillingness to pursue this specific area of inquiry and the fact that the president has limited the formal review period to 90 days. Biden is only taking action “because of public outcry,” according to Turner, and that is something he believes “is still of grave concern.”
