Since President Donald Trump has been in the White House, there have been very few moments when Democrats have agreed with the president on a given issue or demand.
According to the Washington Times, one of those moments is happening toward the end of Trump’s time in the White House, as Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) recently stood with the president on his demands to raise the stimulus payment to Americans in the latest COVID-19 relief bill from $600 to $2,000.
Gabbard was incensed over many aspects of the bipartisan relief bill, slamming Congress for putting together nearly a 6,000 paged document and then dropping it on everyone’s desk on the day of the vote, with little to no time to flesh out exactly what the bill entailed.
Even more upsetting to the Hawaii congresswoman was the $600 direct stimulus payments for Americans. Gabbard called the amount a “slap in the face” and explained that $600, for a majority of struggling Americans, barely pays a couple of small bills, let alone rent or mortgage payments.
“It is an insult and a slap in the face to every single American in this country who is struggling because of this COVID pandemic who is concerned about not being able to pay the rent, about eviction, about whether you’ll have enough to buy groceries or medicine for yourself or your loved ones,” Gabbard said.
Her statements echoed those of Trump’s, who blasted the bill not only for the ridiculous amounts of foreign special interest pork contained within the bill but also the small amount set aside for struggling Americans. The president demanded that the bill be updated to increase the stimulus check amount, while also telling Congress they needed to rework it to remove all of the excess foreign spending.
According to Yahoo, the president previously called the bipartisan relief package a “disgrace.” The massive bill was sent to him while he vacationed in Florida over the Christmas break, with a number of congresspeople urging him to sign the bill, though he hasn’t indicated one way or another if he will.
Gabbard joined a number of House Democrats in siding with the president’s demands to increase the check amount, however, those same Democrats did not seem interested in agreeing to cut out the unreal amount of foreign spending included in the bill.
In the meantime, many Americans will continue to struggle while the president fights for the people and Washington politicians continue to play stupid games.
