Former Trump adviser Roger Stone was ordered to report to federal prison by June 30, after being sentenced to 40 months by a federal judge in November after being convicted of lying to Congress and obstructing the Mueller investigation.
Rumors have swirled for months that President Trump may move to pardon Stone, and Trump appeared to tacitly confirm the rumors in a tweet on Thursday morning.
Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk tweeted on Tuesday: “Never forget: Roger Stone will serve more time in prison than 99% of these rioters destroying America All because he supports Donald Trump. This isn’t justice. RT for a full pardon of Roger Stone!”
Donald Trump complied with Kirk’s request, retweeting the call for a full pardon for Stone, cryptically adding that Stone can “sleep well at night.”
“No. Roger was a victim of a corrupt and illegal Witch Hunt, one which will go down as the greatest political crime in history. He can sleep well at night!” Trump said, causing a flurry of media and internet speculation about what the next move is.
Though Democrats have worked together to vilify Stone before the nation, Donald Trump has applauded Stone’s resolve and loyalty in the face of what many believe was a setup. Trump said in February that he’d “love to see Roger exonerated, and I’d love to see it happen because I personally think he was treated very unfairly.”
Stone himself has said that he does not expect a pardon from Trump, but told Fox Host Tucker Carlson in April that reporting to jail is “essentially a death sentence” due to the risk of contracting coronavirus at his age and with his history of health problems.
