President Trump has issued an order to the Department of Justice to investigate the shocking death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer.
“At my request, the FBI and the Department of Justice are already well into an investigation as to the very sad and tragic death in Minnesota of George Floyd,” Trump tweeted on Wednesday evening.
“I have asked for this investigation to be expedited and greatly appreciate all of the work done by local law enforcement. My heart goes out to George’s family and friends. Justice will be served!”
Floyd died after being handcuffed and pinned to the ground by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin on Monday, sparking nationwide outrage and widespread protests.
Fox News reported that “The Justice Department said Thursday morning that it has made the federal investigation into George Floyd’s death a “top priority” and assigned experienced prosecutors to investigate the death of the Minneapolis black man.”
Protests broke out all over the nation after a video of Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck until he became unresponsive went viral.
Some protests turned sour on Wednesday, with looting and arson running rampant in Minneapolis and even resulting in the death of an as-of-yet unidentified Minneapolis man.
