Trump invokes Fifth Amendment rights in New York deposition appearance

Former President Donald Trump has long been targeted by Democrat New York Attorney General Letitia James in a civil probe of his business dealings, and on Wednesday, he announced that he invoked his Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination, asserting that the aggressive attempts by the left to take him down by any means necessary left him “no choice,” as Fox News reports.

James has pledged for years that she would take a fine-toothed comb to the former president’s affairs and – to the delight of those suffering from rabid Trump Derangement Syndrome – has pursued a far-reaching civil probe in which he was called to sit for questioning this week.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Trump explained why he felt he had no other option than to invoke his constitutional right not to provide evidence during the deposition, calling James’ probe an “unfounded politically motivated Witch Hunt” and lamenting that the Biden administration and left-wing prosecutors nationwide have “lost all moral and ethical bounds of decency.”

Blasting the ongoing nature of the New York investigation into his finances and business dealings, Trump said, “What Letitia James has tried to do the last three years is a disgrace to the legal system, an affront to New York State taxpayers, and a violation of the solemn rights and protections afforded by the United States Constitution.”

Warning against the abuses in which he believes James and those like her are routinely engaging, Trump added, “We cannot permit a renegade and out-of-control prosecutor to use this investigation as a means of advancing her political career. New York deserves better, and this Country deserves better. This is a vindictive and self-serving fishing expedition, the likes of which our Country has never seen before.”

Though liberals this week pointed out with great glee that Trump once wondered aloud why anyone would invoke the Fifth Amendment if they had nothing to hide, the former president confronted them head-on.

“I once asked, ‘If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?’ Now I know the answer to that question. When your family, your company, and all the people in your orbit have become the targets of an unfounded, politically motivated Witch Hunt supported by lawyers, prosecutors, and the Fake News Media, you have no choice,” Trump declared.

Referencing the far-reaching federal search of his Florida estate that occurred earlier in the week, Trump added, “If there was any question in my mind, the raid of my home, Mar-a-Lago on Monday by the FBI; just two days prior to this deposition, wiped out any uncertainty,” as to how he should approach Wednesday’s proceeding.

In the wake of the week’s events, Trump reportedly achieved record-breaking fundraising tallies, suggesting that the former president’s son, Eric Trump, was correct in observing that “the American people are pissed” and that the relentless overreach by his father’s foes will continue to galvanize the conservative base and bolster the fortunes of a prospective 2024 campaign that appears more likely by the day.
