Trump insider Steve Bannon sentenced to four months in jail

The House committee investigating Jan. 6 is a partisan witch hunt. Now one of former President Donald Trump's allies is facing time behind bars because of it.

Trump associate and media mogul Steve Bannon was sentenced to four months in jail for refusing to answer a subpoena issued by the committee, Breitbart reported. U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols sentenced Bannon Friday, including imposing a $6,500 fine.

Prosecutors were pushing for a six-month sentence, while Bannon's attorneys believed probation was a more appropriate punishment. The judge has allowed Bannon to stay out of jail while his attorneys appeal the sentence.

In July, Bannon was found guilty of two counts of contempt of Congress. He had refused to submit documents and would not appear for a deposition from the committee, facts which led the judge to impose the stiff sentence.

"In my view, Mr. Bannon has not taken responsibility for his actions," Nichols said. "Others must be deterred from committing similar crimes."

The supposed crimes Bannon committed have to do with his role as an unofficial adviser in Trump's 2020 presidential reelection campaign and his actions during the Jan. 6 incursion at the U.S. Capitol. Trump had claimed executive privilege against his own testimony, and Bannon was legally advised to do the same based on that claim.

"He chose to hide behind fabricated claims of executive privilege and advice of counsel to thumb his nose at Congress," prosecutor J.P. Cooney claimed. "Your honor, the defendant is not above the law, and that is exactly what makes this case important," Cooney said in court.

Still, the judge recognized that Bannon "did not completely ignore the fact he had received the subpoena nor did he fail to engage with the committee at all." However, Bannon has been publicly critical of the committee and afterward excoriated the "illegitimate regime" of President Joe Biden, which will have its "judgment day" on Nov. 8.

There's something manufactured and malicious about the whole Jan. 6 investigation. It seems Bannon is just another pawn in the Democrats' game to punish their opponents.
