The 15th District, covering portions of southern Ohio, was won by Trump in 2020. Though Carey was leading in polls, it was uncertain whether the momentum for conservatives would stand following election day.
Russo was backed by President Joe Biden as well as other Democrat leaders in the weeks leading up to the election. Democrat leaders had hoped to pull off an upset to shore up its slim lead in the House.
“Congratulations to Mike Carey on a fantastic victory in Ohio. I am very proud to have endorsed him early and strongly. He will be a great congressman!” Trump wrote in a statement.

The win continues to both show Trump’s influence and conservative momentum as the nation marks one year since the controversial 2020 election. Conservatives hope to build on the victory toward taking power back in the House and Senate following the 2022 midterm elections.
