Trump-endorsed Maryland State Delegate Dan Cox wins GOP governor nomination

Former President Donald Trump has been discounted by members of his own party. However, it’s clear that he still has a hold on Republican voters.

Trump-backed State Delegate Dan Cox won the nomination to become the GOP candidate in Maryland’s gubernatorial race, the Washington Examiner reported. Cox bested rival Kelly Schulz, who was the favorite of anti-Trump Gov. Larry Hogan.

It’s unsurprising that the outgoing governor backed Schulz, who served in his administration as labor secretary and commerce secretary. Hogan, who is retiring, has railed against Trump and is positioning himself to face off against the former president in the 2024 presidential election as both men make moves suggesting a bid for the party’s nomination.

Meanwhile, voters chose Cox, who was an outspoken supporter of the former president. He joined Trump during his attempt to block the certification of the 2020 presidential election in calling former Vice President Mike Pence a “traitor” for failing to help.

Much to the chagrin of Democrats, Cox also attended the Jan. 6 protest that eventually turned into the incursion at the U.S. Capitol. The candidate had even taken a crack at impeaching Hogan for implementing COVID-19 restrictions.

However, Cox has enjoyed the support of one surprising group — his rivals. The Democratic Governors Association poured nearly $1 million in ads leaning toward Cox, likely seeing him as the candidate that’s easier to beat in the left-leaning state.

The state is heavily Democratic, and the governor’s race is shaping to pit Cox against odds-on Democratic favorite, author Wes Moore. The Cook Political Report, regarded as non-partisan, projects a win for Democrats.

There is still time for either party to make a successful play for the governor’s mansion come November. However, the real takeaway from Cox’s win is that Trump supporters are unwavering in their staunch loyalty to the former president, and his endorsement seems to be the golden ticket for many candidates.
