President Trump just shocked many of his supporters by announcing on Monday that he supports an investigation into new accusations against Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and that if the allegations are confirmed, DeJoy should be fired.
During his Labor Day press conference, Trump addressed allegations that DeJoy has violated campaign finance rules by pressuring former employees to donate to the GOP.
The Daily Caller reported:
DeJoy — who has been a central figure in the debate over mail-in ballots ahead of the 2020 general election — was accused by the Washington Post over the weekend of pressuring employees at his old company, New Breed Logistics, to make donations to the Republican party and then reimbursing them out of his own pocket.
The New York Times reported that more than a dozen New Breed Logistics employees routinely donated to the same Republican candidates on the same day, although the report did not include any details on how DeJoy allegedly reimbursed said employees for making donations.
President Trump, who previously voiced support for DeJoy during the Democrat party’s assault against DeJoy over allegations that he was attempting to manipulate the election via the USPS, agreed that the allegations are serious and should be investigated.
Trump told reporters:
I don’t know much about it, I read something this morning. I don’t know exactly what the story is. I’ll know within a short period of time. Let the investigations go. We’ll see how that goes. I think he’s a very honest guy.
However, when reporters pressed Trump for an answer about whether he would remove DeJoy if the accusations are true, Trump replied: “Yes, if something can be proven.”
House Democrats announced Tuesday that they would launch an investigation into the allegations.
