With the GOP feeling increasingly bullish on the party’s prospects for the 2022 midterms, former President Donald Trump is hailing the success achieved Saturday by Republican Susan Wright – a candidate he personally endorsed – in advancing to the runoff in the special election race for Texas’ 6th Congressional District seat, according to the Washington Examiner.
Wright, who is seeking the position held by her late husband, Rep. Ron Wright, until his death due to COVID-19 complications in February of this year, is now set to face off against Republican state Rep. Jake Elizey in a runoff battle that will be held no sooner than May 24.
On Sunday, Trump heralded Wright’s victory, saying, “Congratulations to Susan Wright on her great surge yesterday, which made her NUMBER ONE and assures her participation in the TX-06 runoff against another Republican.”
Trump added, “The Democrats have just conceded the race. Susan surged after I gave her an endorsement last week. Her wonderful husband is looking down, and is very proud of her!”
The former president announced his endorsement of Wright in late April, saying, according to The Hill, Susan Wright will be a terrific Congressomwn (TX-06) for the Great State of Texas. She is the wife of the late Congressman Ron Wright, who has always been supportive of our America First Policies,” adding:
Susan will be strong on the Border, Crime, Pro-Life, our brave Military and Vets, and will ALWAYS protect your Second Amendment…
…Susan has my Complete and Total Endorsement!
As Fox News reported, Wright herself paid homage to her departed spouse following the hard-fought election contest, saying, “It’s been challenging at times, but the work goes on and he would want me to do what he did which is engage with voters, hear what they have to say, and talk to them so that is what we are doing.” She also gave a well-placed nod to the former president’s signature slogan in a Saturday tweet:

Wright has succeded in securing the endorsements of a growing number of Texas Republicans as well as that of the conservative Club for Growth, an anti-tax advocacy group that has already poured substantial funding into her campaign, according to Fox News.
With the countdown to the midterm elections well underway in political circles, it is becoming apparent that former President Trump continues to bring significant influence to bear within the party ranks and will almost certainly play a major role in shaping critical races across the country.
