Trump Blasts Sessions During Critical Alabama Senate Race

President Donald Trump still has no fond affection for his former Attorney General Jeff Sessions after sharply criticizing him on Twitter Wednesday morning. The President’s tweet is ill-timed for Sessions who is in the middle of a hotly contested Republican Senate primary race in Alabama.

For 20 years, Sessions held a Senate seat in Alabama until he vacated it to accept Trump’s invitation to be the nation’s attorney general. However, the relationship between Sessions and Trump turned bitter after Sessions recused himself from the Russian collusion investigation. Session’s recusal led to the appointment of Robert Mueller as the special investigator.

Session’s primary results thus far were not enough to secure the needed majority which means he will face his opponent, former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville, in a runoff election on later in March.

President Trump had previously remained silent about the race. However, after the report of the primary results came in, President Trump weighed in with such force, it will likely serve as a strong endorsement of Session’s opponent. “This is what happens to someone who loyally gets appointed Attorney General of the United States & then doesn’t have the wisdom or courage to stare down & end the phony Russia Witch Hunt,” Trump tweeted. “Recuses himself on FIRST DAY in office, and the Mueller Scam begins!”

Tuberville responded that he agreed with the President’s sentiments. “Mr. President, I could not agree more, and in 27 days help will be on the way!” he tweeted.

The winner of the March 31 runoff will face Democratic Senator Doug Jones who won the seat in 2017 after defeating Roy Moore.
