Trump aides Peter Navarro and Dan Scavino held in contempt of Congress

Democrats continue to investigate the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, for political gain. Now two of former President Donald Trump’s ex-aides may be facing penalties in connection with the investigation.

The House of Representatives held Trump’s ex-aides, Peter Navarro and Dan Scavino, in contempt of Congress for failing to comply with subpoenas from the Jan. 6 investigation committee, the Washington Examiner reported. The vote was mostly along party lines as Democrats continue to exploit the event for political gain.

The Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol had subpoenaed Scavino back in September. He was targeted because he had been with Trump the day before the incident and was close to the then-president as his deputy chief of staff for communications.

The committee further contended that Scavino used his post to publicize the “Save America” rally that they say was organized to stop the certification of the electoral votes that day. Lawmakers also claim Scavino has footage from the event that would assist the investigation.

The other aide, former trade adviser Navarro, was subpoenaed earlier this year by the committee. It claimed that his book “In Trump Time” reportedly included sections where “he described this plan as the ‘Green Bay Sweep’ and stated that it was designed as the “last, best chance to snatch a stolen election from the Democrats’ jaws of deceit.”

Both men claim they don’t have to testify due to executive privilege though the committee disagrees. However, they could face jail time and $100,000 fines for each count.

Democrats have clearly attempted to use this issue to target the GOP, and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has promised to abolish the committee if the Republicans regain the majority in the 2022 midterm elections. Just before Wednesday’s vote, the California Republican railed against this effort.

“The January 6 Committee is a political show trial that tramples on civil rights and congressional norms,” he tweeted. “When Republicans win back the House, this theater will STOP,” McCarthy vowed.

Democrats can’t let January 6 go because they have nothing else to counter with. Unfortunately, these men have been caught up in the political crossfire.
