President Trump may be focused on pursuing election challenges as Joe Biden attempts to take over the White House, but his administration continues to carry out Trump’s objectives regardless of Democrat opposition.
The Trump administration announced on Wednesday that California will be sanctioned by the Department of Health and Human Services due to “illegal” mandates requiring health care plans in the state to cover abortions.
President Trump has been the most strongly pro-life President in recent history, and his administration has made a point to take action instead of mouthing platitudes.
HHS Secretary Alex Azar announced in a press release that $200 million in federal Medicaid funds earmarked for California would be blocked from disbursement due to California’s policy of “illegally mandating that all health care plans subject to regulation by the California Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC) cover abortion without exclusion or limitation.”
Additionally, the HHS has also referred a lawsuit to the Department of Justice that involves a nurse who claims that she was forced to assist in an elective abortion procedure.
The DOJ confirmed this week that the University of Vermont Medical Center will be prosecuted over the matter.
“California and the University of Vermont Medical Center have violated federal conscience laws and refused to work with us to take corrective action, so we are now taking action to hold them to account,” HHS Secretary Alex Azar declared.
California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) defiantly responded to the news via tweet, writing:
Nothing like the ‘pro-life’ party eliminating healthcare during a GLOBAL PANDEMIC. California will survive without this $$ for now — but their frail, pathetic patriarchal system they are so desperate to protect won’t.
Vice President Mike Pence celebrated the HHS decision on Wednesday in a statement, heralding Donald Trump’s fulfillment of his pre-inauguration promise to “protect the innocent.”
Even before our inauguration four years ago, President Trump wrote to the Speaker of the House of Representatives in words that I believe are well to reflect on today. He said, “I believe it is the most basic duty of government to guard the innocent.” With that in mind, he made it clear and he said, “I will veto any legislation that weakens current pro-life federal policies or encourages the destruction of innocent human life at any stage.” And President Donald Trump has kept his word every single day.
“I believe what we have demonstrated over these past four years is that when men and women who cherish the sanctity of life come together, let their voices be heard; when we rally behind great leaders at every level who will stand without apology for life, we can make extraordinary progress,” Pence noted.
