Top FBI official Steven D'Antuono announces sudden retirement

The Daily Wire reports that Steven D'Antuono, one of the FBI's top officials, is suddenly retiring.

D'Antuono has been working as the assistant director at the FBI's Washington Field Office. He has been there ever since October 2020, when he was promoted from his previous position as the special agent in charge of the FBI's Detroit Field Office.

D'Antuono, in recent years, has been part of some of the biggest investigations that the agency has carried out.

This includes the FBI's investigation of the conspiracy to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D), which D'Antuono oversaw while leading the Detroit Field Office. It also includes the FBI's investigation into the Capitol protests of Jan. 6, 2021: D'Antuono, during his time at the FBI Washington Field Office, has been one of the leading supervisors of this investigation.

Now, however, D'Antuono is suddenly retiring.

FBI Director Christopher Wray has circulated an internal FBI memo that, in part, reads:

I'm pleased to announce that David Sundberg will serve as the next assistant director in charge of the Washington Field Office. He replaces Steve D'Antuono, who i sretiring at the end ofthis month.

The big question, of course is, "why the sudden resignation?"

The short answer is that we don't know because the FBI hasn't said. But, there are some theories out there based on the circumstances of this retirement.

The most conspicuous circumstance is the midterm elections. At the time of this writing, control of the House has yet to be decided. But, it is expected to go to Republicans, and Republicans, if given control of the House, have vowed to conduct a number of investigations into a wide range of issues.

It is expected, for example, that one of these investigations will be into the FBI, specifically into the claims of the corruption and politicization of the agency. House Republicans have already made it clear that they have evidence, including whistleblower evidence, and some of that evidence touches upon D'Antuono's work.

Accordingly, many are suggesting that D'Antuono's sudden retirement is to head off the impending investigation of House Republicans.

Admittedly, this is just speculation. But, until an insider says otherwise, it appears to be the best explanation that we have.
