'Today' co-anchor Savannah Guthrie tests positive for COVID-19 during Tuesday show

In what was surely a frustrating development for the staff of NBC's Today, co-anchor Savannah Guthrie rushed away from the Tuesday morning broadcast after testing positive for COVID-19 – the third time she has received such a result, as Variety reports.

The news was broken to viewers by fill-in host Sheinelle Jones, who had been sitting in for show co-host Hoda Kotb for several days and found herself having to pull double duty after Guthrie's surprise diagnosis.

“By the way, it has been an interesting morning for us,” Jones began. “As we said, Savannah left early, she wasn't feeling great, so she took a COVID test.”

Jones continued, “It came back positive. So, as soon as we found out, she rushed home to rest up. So Savannah, we love you, wishing you a speedy recovery.”

As Variety noted, Guthrie's prior bouts with the virus came in January and May of last year, respectively, and the outlet indicated that the NBC morning personality has received COVID-19 vaccinations in the past, including at least one booster shot.

Seeming to bask in a bit of schadenfreude on Tuesday was journalist Megyn Kelly, who commented on Guthrie's COVID-positive status during that day's installment of her SiriusXM podcast.

Kelly, a one-time NBC colleague of Guthrie's, did not strike a terribly sympathetic note when discussing the Today host's hasty departure from her morning on-air duties, as the New York Post noted.

“This is reportedly Savannah's third bout of COVID, and I guarantee you she's had all the vaccines and the boosters because you won't be able to go into 30 Rock without them,” Kelly said, referencing the Manhattan landmark where Today is based.

Kelly reiterated the irony of the scenario, saying, “There's zero chance NBC is not requiring all boosters. And this is [Guthrie's] third bout of COVID.”

Lambasting the grip that irrational fear of the virus still appears to have on certain segments of the population, Kelly added. “All of it is such a perfect indication of how the left – and especially the left in New York – continues to live.”

“It's amazing to me. These guys are leftists, and it's amazing to me to see how the leftists still live under the grip of COVID,” the former Fox News personality declared.

As a humorous illustration of that point, Kelly joked, “I got dollars to donuts that [Today weatherman Al] Roker's there with an N95 tomorrow all day on set.”

PageSix noted that with Guthrie's – albeit temporary – absence, Today is now missing both of its primary co-anchors, as Kotb has been off the air since her last appearance on Feb. 17, with what has been described as a “family health matter.”

With three COVID-19 diagnoses now under her belt, it would seem that someone as supposedly worldly-wise as Guthrie would have concluded by now that her devotion to endless vaccine doses may have been misplaced. But given the intractable nature of the liberal way of thinking on this issue – and many others – it is probably best not to hold one's breath for such an admission.
