Texas National Guard builds miles of barbed wire barriers to slow flow of illegal immigrants

The Texas National Guard erected miles of barbed wire barrier to keep illegal immigrants from crossing into the border town of El Paso, Texas, Breitbart reported. Gov. Greg Abbott had deployed them under Operation Lone Star.

The Texas Republican was faced with stopping a humanitarian crisis in the city after President Joe Biden's administration repeatedly ignored the problem of illegal immigration. Abbott ordered the Guardsmen to secure the area.

A video posted by the Texas Military Department on Christmas Day showed the fruits of their labor. "This morning, service members deployed to El Paso, Texas, constructed a triple-strand concertina barrier near the border to secure the area from illegal crossings," the account boasted.

The undertaking took 72 hours over the holiday weekend, according to Major General Ronald "Win" Burkett. "They’re focused on deterrence, they’re focused on sending a message that unlawful crossings is not an option," he said.

"You’ve got to go to the POE (Port of Entry)," Burkett added. The general went on to note that it took four C-130 aircraft flying the equipment and 400 soldiers Saturday to get the job done.

The Guardsmen are set to continue their mission as the problem wears on for the city. El Paso has become ground zero for Biden's immigration failures as Border Patrol continues to release more migrants into the city.

Some non-governmental organizations have taken in the nearly 6,000 illegal immigrants that flooded the city last week. The previous week saw 10,000 released, with many ending up on the streets.

Earlier this month, El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser declared a state of emergency as the city struggled to keep up with the demands of thousands of newcomers, Reuters reported. The Democrat decried the city's lack of resources to care for the incoming migrants properly.

"We wanted to make sure people are treated with dignity," Leeser said of his decision. "We want to make sure everyone is safe."

The order also allows for more resources from state law enforcement and provides additional transportation, according to Deputy City Manager Mario D'Agostino. The city has always been friendly to border crossers, but the unchecked immigration has forced the hand of El Paso officials.

In August, El Paso sent as many as 14,000 migrants to cities like New York and Chicago. Many were from Venezuela and entered without having sponsors in the U.S.

However, the Biden administration returned many to Mexico under the Title 42 public health stipulation. That lead El Paso to cancel the program in October, though it may be restarted if Venezuelans are readmitted.

Title 42 is still under threat of cancellation, which could exacerbate the immigration problem if it's abolished, according to Fox News. The Biden administration has sought to do away with it, though even the Department of Justice admits it would mean even more border crossings.

Illegal immigration has been a nightmare under Biden, and cities like El Paso often take the brunt of it. Every city and state has the right to protect its borders, but the administration has been actively working against them -- and that's where the National Guard and leaders like Abbott step in.
