The problem at the border seems to be a low priority for President Joe Biden’s administration. However, things are so bad that a fellow Democrat is now sounding the alarm.
Hidalgo County, Texas Judge Richard Cortez is calling on the Biden administration to stop releasing COVID-19 positive illegal immigrants into his jurisdiction, Breitbart reported. This same Democratic judge opposed Gov. Greg Abbott’s crisis declaration but is now singing a different tune.
When Abbott declared a state disaster, Cortez scoffed at the problem. “I acknowledge that we are seeing a greater number of immigrants crossing into Texas to either seek asylum, to work, or for other purposes,” he said then. “Apparently, Governor Abbott has information that we don’t have. In speaking to local law enforcement, they have not reported levels of criminal activity that would require a disaster proclamation.”
However, La Joya Police Department recently revealed that illegal immigrants, who were housed at a county hotel by Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley, were released by U.S. Border Patrol despite being infected with the coronavirus. Police learned of this after practice responding to a call of unruly patrons at a Whataburger who turned out to be the sick migrants.
This prompted the judge to make his statement calling on the federal government to intervene. “Ill-conceived policies by both the federal and state governments are beginning to have serious consequences on Hidalgo County,” Cortez said in his statement. “I call on federal immigration officials to stop releasing infected migrants into our community,” he said.
“We now face a potential crisis because of the federal policy of releasing infected migrants into our community, coupled with the state policy that prohibits us from implementing essential safety measures,” Cortez continued, taking a dig at Abbott’s reluctance to institute another mask mandate. “This is unacceptable,” he charged.
Democrats care very little about the suffering inflicted by illegal immigrants on border towns and cities. It’s been a crisis all along, but for Cortez, it took the added problem of increased COVID-19 infections to finally take notice.
Americans have been under restrictions or flat-out locked in their homes since March 2020 due to COVID-19 precautions. Meanwhile, illegal immigrants crossing the border who are infected with the virus are allowed right in — how is this good for Texas or for America?
