The rise of so-called “sanctuary” cities and states for illegal immigrants was something former President Donald Trump pushed back against. It looks like President Joe Biden’s administration is doing all it can to undo that hard work.
The U.S. Supreme Court has dismissed three cases Thursday brought against “sanctuary” policies that hamstrung local law enforcement from cooperating with the federal government over illegal immigration, according to The Hill. City and state governments were in a deadlock over federal funding because of these Trump-era crackdowns.
The dismissal came at the request of the Biden administration as well as cities in New York and California, which were both embroiled in lawsuits over Trump’s immigration policy. Lower courts in both of those states had mixed outcomes over whether Congressional law enforcement funding could be withheld from those uncooperative municipalities, Fox News reported.
The authority to withhold the Justice Assistance Grants came from a 2017 Trump executive order. It targeted New York and San Francisco for their sanctuary status and refusal to comply with regulations like sharing immigration status with federal officials, alerting immigration agents if any suspected illegal immigrant was scheduled for release, as well as allowing immigration officials into prisons.
The new administration was eager to overturn the policy and dispense with cases that became moot now that Trump is out of office and Biden can ignore illegal immigration like all Democrat administrations. “We’re glad this issue has finally been put to rest,” Dennis Herrera, San Francisco City Attorney, told the news outlet. “Federal officials can do their job in San Francisco, just like anywhere else in the country. But we were not about to let our police, firefighters and nurses be commandeered and turned into the Trump administration’s deportation force.”
“Local law enforcements’ ability to protect their jurisdictions should never be compromised to push an anti-immigrant agenda,” New York State Attorney General Letitia James also weighed in. “We look forward to continuing to work with the administration to ensure state and localities never have to choose between protecting their autonomy and protecting the public’s safety.”
The Biden administration’s open opposition to restrictions on illegal immigration has predictably caused an influx at the border. Rather than deal with the issue, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki flippantly dismissed the problem altogether. “We don’t take our advice or counsel from former President Trump on immigration policy, which was not only inhumane but ineffective over the last four years,” Psaki said of the way children of illegals were housed and handled. “We’re going to chart our own path forward, and that includes treating children with humanity and respect,” which simply means getting everyone released into the country as soon as possible.
All of this points to the way Biden and his Department of Justice will proceed when it comes to illegal immigration, and it’s not good for the nation. They clearly have no intention of stopping anyone from crossing the border illegally, and will do everything in their power to make sure Trump’s progress against the problem is all but erased.
