Superstar singer Celine Dion reveals tragic medical diagnosis

Sad news emerged from the world of entertainment this week when superstar singer Celine Dion revealed to the world that she had been diagnosed with a rare and devastating neurological disorder known as stiff-person syndrome, as the Daily Caller reports.

The world-renowned hitmaker, 54, disclosed her condition to more than 5.2 million followers in an emotional video posted to Instagram on Wednesday.

According to CBS News, Dion began her tragic disclosure to fans by declaring, "I've always been an open book, and I wasn't ready to say anything before, but I'm ready now.

"I've been dealing with problems with my health for a long time, and it's been really difficult for me to face these challenges and to talk about everything that I've been going through," Dion continued.

The "My Heart Will Go On" and "Because You Loved Me" mega-star then delivered the heartbreaking news, adding, "I've been diagnosed with a very rare neurological disorder called stiff-person syndrome, which affects something like one in a million people. While we're still learning about this rare condition, we now know this has been what's causing all of the spasms I've been having."

Dion noted that the symptoms of her condition have been impacting "every aspect" of daily life and have caused mobility problems as well as prohibiting her from singing in the manner to which she is accustomed.

As a result, Dion lamented, she would be forced to cancel a planned February restart of a European tour that was set to run through July of next year.

According to NBC News, stiff-person syndrome can produce rigidity in the limbs and torsos of sufferers and is known to cause muscle spasms capable of interfering with walking and standing.

The outlet quoted Yale School of Medicine neurology professor Dr. Richard Nowak as saying that the syndrome "has a range of severity, from quite mild – easily managed with a little bit of medication – to folks that are quite severe that can be, frankly, quite disabled from it."

Harvard Medical School rheumatologist Dr. Simon Helfgott opined to NBC News, "This is just such a severe diagnosis to have, especially if you're an entertainer [on] the world-class type of stage. It's going to be very, very challenging to be able to continue."

Even so, the five-time Grammy Award-winning artist remains hopeful for an eventual return to the stage, even in a reduced capacity, as CBS News further reported.

"I have a great team of doctors working alongside me to help me get better, and my precious children who are supporting me and giving me hope," Dion stated, adding, "I'm working hard with my sports medicine therapist every day to build back my strength and my ability to perform again. But I have to admit, it's been a struggle. All I know is singing. It's what I've done all my life and it's what I love to do the most."

Clearly very emotional about the challenges she is facing, Dion ended her message to fans by urging, "Take care of yourselves, be well" and expressing her fervent hope to see them again "real soon," a wish that is undoubtedly mutual in the hearts of millions of admirers all around the globe.
