Study finds Moderna Covid-19 vaccine worse for heart health

A new study found that Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine could be worse for the heart than the Pfizer jab, the Daily Caller reported. Those who received the Moderna shot were two to three times more likely to experience side effects such as myocarditis and pericarditis.

Researchers compared the rates of heart-related side effects in two groups of Canadians, one who took Moderna and the other who received Pfizer. The findings were published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

The study was conducted at the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control in Vancouver to review incidences of heart-related side effects following the jabs. They looked at patients 21 days after their second COVID-19 vaccine that was taken between Jan. 1 and Sept. 9, 2021.

Researchers found that Moderna recipients experienced a rate of 35.6 instances of myocarditis per million doses given and 22.9 instances of pericarditis per million. Those who received Pfizer's shot had 12.6 incidences of myocarditis per million doses and 9.4 cases of pericarditis per million doses.

Experts expect to see about 2 per million cases of myocarditis in the 18 to 39 age group in a given year, according to the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota. Older adults have a rate of about 2.2 per million, suggesting that the increase in vaccinated individuals may be linked to inoculation.

The fact that heart inflammation problems outpaced the general public's baseline risk is concerning. It also seems that younger patients and men are at an especially increased risk.

Still, the authors were quick to point out how rare these instances were. Dr. Naveed Janjua, lead author of the study, said patients must "consider the self-limiting and mild nature of most myocarditis events, benefits provided by vaccination, higher effectiveness of the Moderna vaccine against infection and hospitalization [found in prior studies], and the apparent higher risk of myocarditis following COVID-19 infection than with mRNA vaccination."

While scientists are still looking for answers, the fact remains that these vaccines have been mandated for large swaths of the population around the world even as safety concerns persist. Moreover, the demographics of certain occupations that fall under mandates is especially troubling in light of who is most at risk.

The U.S. military, which is largely young and male, imposed a vaccine mandate through a memo from Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in Aug. 2021, Fox News reported. Service members continue to be punished or dismissed if they refuse the jab, and Republican lawmakers are still pushing for answers.

Similarly, colleges and universities full of young men and women have also mandated vaccines. Last month, Fordham University doubled down on its requirement by mandating a fourth dose of the vaccine for all students and staff, the New York Post reported.

The New York Jesuit institution not only endorses this policy, but it also believes it is paving the way for other institutions to follow suit. Meanwhile, the risks the vaccines pose to young men may be significant if the Canadian researchers were on the right track.

More studies will certainly be done on this issue to settle the question once and for all. In the meantime, it's irresponsible to continue to mandate them when so many concerns about the safety of these vaccines remain.
