Special Counsel near end of Mar-a-Lago Trump classified document investigation

Special Counsel Jack Smith's investigation into allegations of former Donald Trump's classified documents in his Mar-a-Lago home is nearing an end, according to reports.

The case could end in a possible indictment against the former president over his handling of the materials.

The details

"It was reported by the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday that Smith 'has all but finished obtaining testimony and other evidence in his criminal investigation' into Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified information at Mar-a-Lago," the Washington Examiner reported.

"The outlet said that 'some of Trump’s close associates are bracing for his indictment and anticipate being able to fundraise off a prosecution.' It added that 'in recent weeks prosecutors working for Smith have completed interviews with nearly every employee at Trump’s Florida home' and that 'questions that appeared to home in on specific elements Smith’s team would need to show to prove a crime.'"

The background

"Dozens of armed FBI agents descended on Mar-a-Lago Aug. 8, 2022, to execute a search warrant for boxes of material sought by the National Archives that Trump brought to Florida after leaving the White House in January, 2021," Newsmax reported.

"The raid led Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint Smith as special prosecutor in the case as well as investigating any role Trump may have played in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol," it added.

"This is the probe widely believed to pose the most serious threat to Trump's freedom," Axios reported.

"Based on the publicly reported evidence, Republicans may struggle in their efforts to defend Trump and undermine Smith's credibility in the way they've tried to do with Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg," it added.

The investigation is in addition to other legal battles Trump has faced in recent weeks, including being found liable in a sexual assault case with E. Jean Carroll that included $5 million in fines.

Trump's Truth Social company has also sued the Washington Post over defamation claims against the media company.

The legal battles continue to pile up as Trump continues his bid for a comeback to the White House in 2024.
