Former Vice President Joe Biden, who was formally declared “president-elect” after the Electoral College made it so on Monday afternoon, was supposed to give a post-victory, televised speech and focus on “unity” and “healing” — as he has for the last several weeks.
Instead, according to Breitbart, Biden took the opportunity to repeatedly slam President Donald Trump and all of the people around the president who have exercised Trump’s right to challenge the results of the 2020 election in the court of law.
The former vice president hit Trump early on in his speech, accusing the president — without naming him — of being responsible for an “abuse of power.”
“People grant power to them. The flame of democracy was lit in this nation a long time ago. And we now know nothing, not even a pandemic or an abuse of power, can extinguish that flame,” Biden said, while constantly clearing his throat of phlegm and coughing.
The 78-year-old president-elect spent an extended amount of time slamming Trump and his lawyers for failing to produce evidence to the courts that would have been significant enough to overturn the results of one of the key battleground states.
“It’s a position so extreme we’ve never seen it before. A position that refused to respect the will of the people, refused to respect the rule of law, and refused to honor our Constitution,” Biden said in reference to Trump’s legal efforts, which the president is fully entitled to pursue.
Biden also made sure to highlight the fact that the U.S. Supreme Court — which has three Justices appointed by Trump — “unanimously” rejected an attempt to overturn the will of “20 million Americans.”
“Thankfully, a unanimous Supreme Court immediately and completely rejected this effort. The court sent a clear signal to President Trump that they would be no part of an unprecedented assault on our democracy,” Biden added, according to PBS.
It was clear after watching Biden cough and sputter through his Electoral College victory speech that he has absolutely zero intentions to extend an olive branch to Trump or his supporters after spending thirty minutes throwing verbal jabs at them.
