Violent crime continued to spiral out of control over the weekend in Democrat-controlled Chicago, leaving at least 88 people shot and 14 killed, according to reports.
The Washington Examiner reported, “Chicago has suffered 326 murders year-to-date, a 1% increase since last year on this date and a 35% increase year-to-date since 2019, according to the Chicago Police Department.”
It added, “There have been 1,489 shooting incidents in the city so far this year, a 12% increase from last year’s figure of 1,333 year-to-date, police added.”
The increased violent crime has led to a new push back against progressive calls to defund the police. White House press secretary Jen Psaki even attempted to flip the blame for defunding the police toward Republicans during a press conference last week.
Psaki said, “The president did mention … that the American Rescue Plan, the state and local funding, something that was supported by the president, a lot of Democrats who supported and voted for the bill, could help ensure local cops were kept on the beat in communities across the country.”
She added, “As you know, didn’t receive a single Republican vote.”
Absolutely shameless. Under questioning from Fox’s Peter Doocy, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki argues it’s *Republicans* who have been defunding the police and not supporting law enforcement because they didn’t vote for Biden’s stimulus boondoggle the American Rescue Plan. pic.twitter.com/pIwfFkonu1

Regardless of events in Washington, it’s clear Chicago’s crime needs a better response. Mayor Lori Lightfoot and others will continue to face new questions on crime as the city’s ongoing violence escalates.
