Shooting locks down Washington D.C. suburb, violent crime on the rise

America's cities are becoming dangerous and violent places. Crime near the nation's capital puts the severity of the problem in perspective.

A shooting in a Washington, D.C., suburb had people locked down for hours amid a shelter-in-place order Friday, the Washington Examiner reported. There were no reported injuries though two vehicles were damaged, and the suspect remains at large.

Police received a report of shots fired around 11:15 a.m. outside of a Falls Church, Virginia, shopping center. Two people near a Starbucks in the shopping center called 911 after they heard the sound of auto glass shattering. They heard two more rounds hit the vehicle after they took cover.

The area was locked down for several hours, trapping patrons in place while police investigated. A group of teenage students on their lunch break were stuck in the Starbucks until the order was lifted around five that evening.

Police looked at several surrounding areas, including an apartment complex that they needed to search floor by floor. "Detectives determined the gunfire was not from an elevated position or from a high caliber weapon," the official Fairfax County Police account tweeted that evening.

"Detectives continue to investigate & remain in the area. Roadways reopened & shelter in place lifted," the authorities said. As of press time, no surveillance footage was available, but investigators promised to follow up on all leads.

Like many major cities, violent crime has been increasing in the nation's capital since 2020, Fox News reported. That year saw a 20% increase over the year prior, and 2021 saw yet another 15% increase on top of that. So far, 2022 is shaping up to add 11% more murders than the same period in 2021.

The movement to defund police and let criminals out of jail early has swept large cities, and with it, ushered in a crime problem. While proponents of this approach claim it is a step toward racial equity, people of all colors and ethnicities are suffering at the hands of violent criminals -- even in our own capital.
