Senator John Cornyn booed at Republican convention after crafting gun control legislation

Republicans repeatedly sell out their constituents with so-called bipartisan legislation. It should be no surprise then when their voters turn on them.

Texas Sen. John Cornyn, who worked with Democrats on crafting new gun control legislation, was booed at his state’s Republican convention Friday, Fox News reported. Spectators jeered and shouted out at Cornyn during his 20-minute speech.

“I’m as passionate as you are about something called the United States Constitution,” Cornyn claimed during his remarks at the 2022 Texas State Republican Convention. However, the Cornyn has been doing just that in Washington, D.C., as he was working with Democrats on legislation to further restrict the Second Amendment.

Following the shooting at a Uvalde, Texas elementary school last month that killed two adults and 19 children, Democrats pounced on the idea of taking gun rights away from law-abiding citizens. The proposed legislation includes increased penalties for straw purchases and expanded background checks for people under 21 purchasing firearms.

There are also other provisions for increased mental health services in schools and for children, but Democrats and Republicans have yet to agree on the particulars. Cornyn said Thursday that they’re “not ready to release any smoke. So we don’t have a deal yet.”

However, Cornyn’s involvement was a shot across the bow for Texas Republicans passionate about preserving gun rights. Despite Cornyn’s being heckled and jeered at the event among his own party, he doubled down on his support for gun control.

“I’ve never given in to mobs and I’m not starting today,” Cornyn reportedly said of the incident, according to a tweet by a journalist. Perhaps the GOP lawmaker feels safe betraying his constituents with his re-election so far away in 2027, but voters in Texas will not forget.

It’s so simple: more laws do not prevent criminals from breaking the law. Although Democrats routinely pretend this fact doesn’t exist while they propose reactionary legislation, Republican voters expect more from their leaders.
