Senator Bob Casey reveals prostate cancer diagnosis

Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) announced that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Casey shared the information in a Twitter post on Thursday with details concerning his medical plans and intention to remain in the Senate.

The announcement

"Last month, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. While this news came as a shock, I can report that I have an excellent prognosis, as well as the benefit of exceptional medical care and the unwavering support of my family," Casey tweeted.

"In the coming months I will undergo surgery, after which I am expected to make a full recovery. I am confident that my recommended course of treatment will allow me to continue my service in the 118th Congress with minimal disruption, and I look forward to the work ahead," he added.

Support pours in

"Following Casey’s announcement, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D), among others, sent well wishes to the 62-year-old senator who was first elected in 2006," Breitbart News reported.

“Lori and I are thinking of Bob and Terese today and sending love and warmth. We look forward to celebrating the Senator’s recovery and the work we’ll do together in the coming years,” he wrote.

The news comes during the same week in which Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) announced that she will be retiring and will not seek reelection in 2024, further complicating the left's future control of the Senate.

Democrats face more than 20 spots up for reelection in 2024, with several facing strong opposition from conservatives threatening to flip Senate control.

The scenario will add to the controversy certain to surround the outcome of the general presidential election as former President Donald Trump and likely other conservatives will battle for the nomination against President Joe Biden.

Casey plans to continue serving in the Senate for now, leaving concerns related to his seat to a future time.

The announcement, however, adds to growing issues related to the future Senate as both parties seek every advantage in the days ahead.
