Senate Republicans are attempting to halt President Joe Biden's welfare-dependent legal immigration inflow to the United States, following the release of new regulations designed to make it more difficult for welfare-dependent foreign nationals to get green cards.

In early 2020, the Trump administration adopted the "public charge" rule, which made it more difficult for foreign nationals to get green cards if they had previously utilized assistance programs such as food stamps, Medicaid, or taxpayer-funded housing, according to a report by Breitbart News.

Very immediately after assuming office, Biden overturned Trump's established public charge regulation, opening the way to welfare-dependent immigration to the United States, which would eventually be paid for by American taxpayers.

Senate Republicans, led by Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS), have reintroduced a proposal to restore the public charge regulation to its previous status.

“… it is fair and sensible to favor prospective new citizens who will not be reliant on government benefits,” Marshall said in a statement.

“We have millions of our own American citizens without health insurance and receiving SNAP benefits, as well as hundreds of thousands sleeping on the streets at night,” Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX), who has filed the identical version in the House, said.

“Instead of making it a priority to find our own citizens homes, meals, and health insurance, Joe Biden continues to exacerbate the issue.“

The resolution is co-sponsored by Senators Ted Budd (R-NC), Mike Braun (R-IN), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Bill Hagerty (R-TN), Josh Hawley (R-MO), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Mike Lee (R-UT), James Risch (R-ID), and Rick Scott (R-FL).

Nehls' House version of the resolution has the support of Representatives. Mike Johnson (R-LA), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), and Andy Ogles (R-TN).

When Trump released the public charge regulation for the first time in 2019, polls revealed that the policy was overwhelmingly popular among Americans.

Almost 6 in 10 Americans favored stopping welfare-dependent legal immigration, including 56% of Hispanics and 71% of black Americans.

According to the National Academies of Science, state and local taxpayers are taxed nearly $1,600 per immigrant per year to pay for their assistance, and foreign-born households use 33 percent more cash aid than native-born American households.

According to a comparable survey conducted by the Center for Immigration Studies, around 63 percent of non-U.S. citizen immigrant households get at least one kind of public welfare, whereas only approximately 35 percent of native-born American households receive welfare.

This indicates that non-citizen families utilize welfare nearly twice as often as native-born households.
