Senate nullifies Joe Biden's changes to “public charge" rules on immigration

The Senate passed a resolution nullifying President Joe Biden's changes to the public charge rule on Wednesday which means those seeking to migrate to the United States must show they will not be a burden on taxpayers.

Former President Donald Trump made extensive use of the public charge rule to combat welfare migrants. Under Trump, foreign nationals would find it more difficult to obtain green cards if they had used welfare programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Medicaid, or housing assistance.

The resolution was introduced by Senator Roger Marshall (R-KS) and passed with a vote of 50-47 thanks to the support of two Democrat Senators.

Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) crossed the aisle to vote with Republicans ensuring the resolution was successful despite Democrats holding a majority in the Senate.

Disincentivizing immigration

Reverting President Biden's changes to the public charge rule will disincentivize immigrants, both legal and illegal, from coming to the United States to take advantage of our welfare system.

The Biden administration would not consider the receipt of public benefits in deciding who would receive green cards which contributed to the massive flood of immigrants hoping to get benefits and consequently put more burden on taxpayers.

Senator Marshall announced the resolution's passing with a statement on Twitter saying, "The Senate just passed my Resolution to overturn the Biden Admin’s Public Charge Rule. We must ensure our immigration system promotes self-sufficiency and protects American taxpayers."

This is a big win for Republicans and the nation in general but it wouldn't have happened if two Democrat Senators hadn't crossed party lines.

Breitbart News Editor Neil Munro theorized that the reason Manchin and Tester supported the motion is because both are up for reelection and are vulnerable so towing a centrist line will go a long way towards being reelected.

Senator Pete Ricketts (R-NE) also celebrated the resolution's passage by saying, "These kinds of failed policies from the Biden administration are part of why we have a crisis on our southern border. Our immigration policies should reward self-sufficiency and grit. Instead, the public charge rule sends a message that taxpayers will pick up the tab for migrants once they reach our country."

Immigration still a disaster

While Republicans in Congress are doing what they can, the immigration situation is still a total disaster and the situation at the southern border is a reminder that there is much to be done.

Thousands of migrants massed near the southern border in preparation for the expiration of Title 42, a Trump-era policy that allowed Border Patrol officers to immediately deport migrants to protect public health.

Without Title 42, Border Patrol agents have little recourse and illegal immigrants are often released into the United States by the thousand. Real change isn't coming until President Biden sees the light and takes action to shut down the border.
