Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer tests positive for COVID

Following a two-week break, lawmakers will reconvene this week, but Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated on Sunday that he had tested positive for COVID-19 and will not be attending.

According to a report by CNN, spokesperson Justin Goodman, the New York Democrat is having “very mild symptoms” and intends to work from home this week.

“As a part of his regular testing regimen, Leader Schumer received a positive test result for COVID-19. The Leader is fully vaccinated and double boosted, and has very mild symptoms,” spokesman Justin Goodman said in a statement on Sunday evening.

As the Senate reconvenes in Washington after the Fourth of July break, the New York Democrat intends to isolate herself and work from a distance this week.

“Anyone who knows Leader Schumer knows that even if he’s not physically in the Capitol, through virtual meetings and his trademark flip phone he will continue with his robust schedule and remain in near constant contact with his colleagues,” Goodman said.

This week, Schumer, 71, was scheduled to reopen talks with fellow Democrat Joe Manchin III of West Virginia on a substantial spending and tax package that the party planned to enact without congressional cooperation.

Democratic Senator from Vermont Patrick Leahy will also be absent due to his fractured hip.

“Anyone who knows Leader Schumer knows that even if he’s not physically in the Capitol, through virtual meetings and his trademark flip phone he will continue with his robust schedule and remain in near constant contact with his colleagues,” Goodman said.
