Democrats have relentlessly attacked Donald Trump since the day he set foot in the White House, but despite their constant obstruction, he’s made history by appointing scores of judges in under four years.
The GOP-controlled Senate just confirmed Donald Trump’s 200th judicial nomination on Wednesday, marking the first time in decades that every single circuit court seat has been filled.
Judge Cory Wilson, Trump’s 200th judicial nominee, was confirmed by the Senate on Wednesday to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. With Wilson’s confirmation, Trump will have appointed 52 appellate judges during his first three and a half years in the White House. President Barack Obama only managed to appoint 55 during both of his terms.
“When we depart this chamber today, there will not be a single circuit court vacancy anywhere in the nation for the first time in at least 40 years,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) ahead of Wednesday’s vote.
According to the Washington Examiner, “no president has confirmed that many judges in one term in 40 years.” Though Hosue Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and company have worked their hardest to block Trump from achieving his goals, this milestone could be one of Trump’s most significant achievements of his entire presidency.
Not only has Trump appointed a total of 200 judges, but he’s also made it clear that he’s not stopping there. Both McConnell and Trump agree that there is still work to be done. McConnell said in February that “my motto for the year is ‘Leave no vacancy behind’. That includes district courts as well. So, we’re a long way from being finished with doing court confirmations this year.”
Democrats, of course, are absolutely furious at Trump’s astonishing success in pushing through the placement of dozens of conservative judges in courts across the nation. Chris Kang, a co-founder of the liberal group Demand Justice, snarled after the confirmation of Trump’s 199th nomination, Judge Justin Walker, last week:
This is all part of the broader Republican plan to take politically minded people and put them into judgeships, thereby making sure that the rulings that come out are going to be more political, more partisan, and less committed to the rule of law.
While President Trump can only spend a maximum of four years in the White House, the judges he places in our nation’s courts will carry the Conservative legacy long after Trump has left public office.
